Abstract: Chutian No.1, a new hybrid seedless watermelon variety of medium maturing bred by Institute of Economic Crops,Hubei Academy of Agricultural Sciences, was developed by crossing the tetraploid watermelon inbred line 4W006CAA as a female parent and diploid watermelon inbred line 2W018CAA as a male parent. The fruit development period of Chutian No.1 was about 34 days, when cultivated on open plots in spring in Hubei Province. The average single fruit weight was 5~7 kg, and the yield is 33 000~34 500 kg/hm². The fruit shape was round, and the pericarp was black and covered with irregular cryptic lines. The pericarp was about 1.2 cm thick and not easy to crack. The flesh color was red, the central and the side sugar content are about 12% and 8%, respectively, the flesh hardness was medium, and the flesh was crisp. It was suitable for cultivating on open plots in spring in Hubei Province. Chutian No.1 had registered as a national non-main crop variety in 2021.
