Abstract: In order to investigate the interactive effects of light level and substrate type on charophyte plants, the 3×2 factorial design of light intensity and substrate type was implemented on Chara braunii Gmel. under culture conditions. Results revealed that the plant height and the ratio of chlorophyll to carotenoid (Chla/Caroten) of C. braunii on the two substrates increased significantly, while the plant ash ratio decreased with the decrease of light intensity. And the maximum dry weight appeared under 25% light treatment conditions, and the minimum dry weight was under 5% light intensity conditions. Compared to sludge substrate, planton the clay substrate had lower plant height, higher ash ratio and lower Chla/Caroten. Two-way ANOVA analysis showed that light intensity and substrate type had significant interactions on plant height, ash ratio, dry weight and pigment pattern.
